"Getting into the best fit college is the key to the student’s life", Abhinav Gogoi
"Through Counseling we are trying to make the parents aware so that they can also support the students in making the right decisions in their life", Abhinav Gogoi

Being an Alumni of Assam Valley School, Mr. Abhinav Gogoi, Teacher & Counselor, Assam Valley School, plans to implement various changes when it comes to developing a student's mind in selecting the right career choices.
In an exclusive interview with educationbiz.com, Mr. Gogoi talks about the initiatives taken in Assam Valley School to bring about a change in a student's life through Right Counseling.

How has been your journey in the counseling sector so far?

It has been a difficult one because there is a lot of dynamics involved in it. Firstly, it’s not just counseling students but you have to counsel the parents as well. At the same time, the counseling world in India is not developed enough which basically means that parents are not aware of their choices that the kids have.

In India, we aspire our children to become doctors, engineers, businessmen etc, not focusing on other career available career options. Through Counseling we are trying to make the parents aware so that they can also support the students in making the right decisions in their life.

Talking about Counseling, what are the initiatives taken in Assam Valley School to make a mark in the life of students.

Firstly, I am very proud to say that the amount of students who are aware of the universities now as compared to the past 3 years has been quite high. When we took a survey, we saw that students have diversified their field of study. So, counseling works in that particular way.

Besides that, a lot of schools cater to the India audiences and in fact, Assam Valley School is trying very hard to spread on a global scale as well as get their students to be global participants of higher education.

What are the responses received from the students and parents, in particular during the counseling process?

In India, we do not have the support system that can actually help us get through this. Maybe we are halfway there but not completely committed to the students’ dreams and aspirations. We are missing out on the medium that can serve as a platform to eradicate the barrier of understanding.

When it comes to Education, what are your views regarding a proper teacher training process before recruiting teachers? Are we lacking on that front?

This is a dilemma in India right now. I would say we have budgetary constraints considering the fact that there is so much required in teacher training. You need to be updated every single day because our global world is moving so quickly that it is hard to keep up.

So, if you don’t keep your teachers updated, simultaneously the students will lack behind. So, there is a dire need of professional development for the teachers for the betterment of the institution.
