Overseas Citizen of India cardholders now eligible for teaching in new AIIMS, IIS
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders have been allowed to apply for teaching posts in the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and the new AIIMS.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders have been allowed to apply for teaching posts in the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and the new AIIMS being set up in different parts of India. The decision is taken after observing that a number of teaching posts were lying vacant in these institutes due to the shortage of eligible candidates.

A Home Ministry official said, "An order has been issued specifying that a person registered as an OCI cardholder under Section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, shall be eligible for appointment as teaching faculty in the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the new AIIMS set up by the central government under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana."

JP Nadda, Union Health Minister, said, "Twenty-two new AIIMS are coming up across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakhya Yojana to reduce the regional imbalance in the healthcare and tertiary fields."

The OCI card scheme was introduced during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention 2006 in Hyderabad. The scheme offers for registration as Overseas Citizen of India of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were citizens of India on January 26, 1950, or thereafter or were eligible to become citizens of India on January 26, 1950, except who is or had been a citizen of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
