Omicron Variant, India Reports 8,306 New Cases And 211 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

What is the Omicron variant of Covid 19? Omicron is the new variant of the virus that causes Covid 19. The World Health Organisation declared it a ‘variant of concern’ on 26 November 2021. With Omicron the new corona buzz world, what comes to mind is, is the Omicron variant worse than the Delta variant.  As of now it is too early to say if its symptoms will be bad or worse than Delta. What is doing rounds right now is subjective evidence that the confirmed cases of covid19 by omicron have mild symptoms and it affects the younger lot. Technically Omicron covid 19 variant was formally known as B.1.1.529.

As per World Health Organisation it is a ‘Variant of Concern’ that indicates it is quite likely to be extremely transmissible and has the potential to replace the Delta variant which was considered a dominant variant. As of now most of the Omicron cases so far have been mild. As per experts it will take weeks to understand the variant. However most of the reported cases of Covid 19 associated with the variant have been mild so far.

On the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAB-VE) WHO designated the variant naming it Omicron. Evidence presented to the TAG-VE gave way to the decision that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes.

What is currently known and the current knowledge about Omicron Variant of Covid 19:

In South Africa and around the world researchers are conducting tests and studies to understand the aspects of Omicron. These findings are being shared with the world as it is available.

Its transmissibility is not clear, whether it spreads easily from person to person compared to Delta. In areas of South Africa the number of people tested positive with this variant has increased. However the study and analysis of its distribution, patterns and determinants (technically known as epidemiologic study) is underway.

The severity is also not clear as of now. Currently there is no information to suggest that symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those from other variants.

The age group which was initially reported with this infection was a younger lot, such as university students and younger individuals who tend to have milder disease.
