Tomato slips out of Mcdonald’s burgers
In the past few months, tomato prices in the country have spiked. The latest wholesale price inflation data showed vegetable prices jumped 17 per cent year-on-year in June.

Renowned global food chain, McDonald’s has decided to slice out tomatoes from its products in North and East India. The decision came on the backdrop of poor quality crop cultivated this time of the year. Well, the move certainly surprised the foodies as on Thursday, when people walked into the outlets, they found that the important element (tomato) was missing from their burgers and wraps.

In order to inform its customers, Connaught Plaza Restaurants, which operates McDonald's stores in northern and eastern regions of the country, had displayed a notice which states that the company was unable to add tomatoes in various products due to temporary unavailability. Unpredictable conditions have impacted the tomato crop, its quality and supply.

In the past few months, tomato prices in the country have spiked. The latest wholesale price inflation data showed vegetable prices jumped 17 per cent year-on-year in June. Retail prices also revealed a similar stubborn trend. On Thursday, online grocer BigBasket listed the price of tomatoes as Rs 69 per kg on its website.

Commenting on the development, spokesperson for McDonald's India (North & East)said that the move to curtail the use of tomatoes in its offerings was not the result of high prices but poor quality . Food brand is working towards resolving this issue.

Other officials too echoed the same voice when contacted by media; most of them said that the company is currently not using any substitute for tomato. Brand is making do with lettuce and onions and it is waiting for supplies to resume.
