Thinking to Start a K-12 School ? Here is all you need to know
A huge number of school-age children serves as an opportunity for budding entrepreneurs and businesspersons to invest their money on education sector

India has a population of more than 130 crores, out which 27.34% is contributed by children who fall under the age bracket of 0-14 years. This huge number of school-age children serves as an opportunity for budding entrepreneurs and businesspersons to invest their money on education sector with a vision to achieve greater returns on investments.

Many businessmen believe that opening a school is a dicey business as it requires a huge amount of money with more than a few decades of experience in the field. That’s indeed true, but it’s not as difficult as it seems to be.

For those who aspire to open a school in India, here is everything you need to know while opening a school in India.

Investment Required

The amount required to invest in the opening of a school depends upon the budget of the businessperson. It is determined by so many factors such as cost of land, the capacity of students you are targeting, the market positioning of your school, the number of staff members, the basic amenities of school and many other things. Once you figure out how much amount that you’re willing to spend on each head, you would be able to calculate the amount you require to invest. In order to start a K-12 school, an investment of Rs 2-4 crores. However, a franchise of an already existing school such as Doon Public School, can be started in Rs 40 lakhs to Rs 5 crores (as level of franchise increases, the investment also increases).

Area Required

The area required to open a school varies with the population of the city, the educational board and increasing levels of education. For example, in metro cities, the CBSE board provides:

Pre-Primary class – class XII: 1 acre

Pre-Primary class – Class X: 0.95 acre

Similarly, various other cities have other parameters to provide land for the schools in this way.

Efficient Staff members

A school operates on a team work. The team not only includes the teachers, but also consists of various non-teaching members who conduct the day-to-day happenings in a school.

The staff must include people like Principal, Coordinator, teachers (NTT, PRT, TGT, PGT, PTI, Music, Dance, Art, Sports), lab assistants, maids, peons, admin staff, accounts staff, along with class III and IV workers such as gardeners, driver, nurse etc.

Proper Infrastructure for Extra-curricular activities

In today’s time, extra-curricular activities play an important role in the overall development of children. Therefore, infrastructure should be supportive to carry out the extra-curricular activities.

The infrastructure for extra-curricular activities includes art and craft labs, music studio, dance room, playground, activity hall, courts for indoor and outdoor sports, science labs and many others.

Getting Affiliation by a Board

Finally you need to get your school affiliated by a board. In India, there are three most common boards, CBSE, ICSE, and various respective state boards. Getting affiliated by a board is like evidence that the school has informed the state education department that the school is now applying for the board’s affiliation.
