Mumbai-based Multispeciality Eye Centre gives architectural makeover to hospitals
The Eye Associates, Mumbai has recently opened its first Multispeciality Eye Centre with state-of-the-art infrastructure and a team of distinguished doctors; aiming to revive the ancient image of Indian hospitals.

A successful hospital design is a science that encompasses space utilization, patient centric, hi-tech infrastructure and pleasing hospitality.

Aiming to meet all requirements of a new age hospital, Mumbai-based Multispeciality Eye Centre has been designed by Samira Rathod Design Associates. Spread in an area of over 3,000 sq ft, the inviting architecture of the eye centre aims to give at-home care warmth to the patients, keeping intact their needs and convenience.

The Multispeciality Eye Centre is located in centrally located area of South Mumbai at Opera House. Apart from the high standard services, the interior design of the examination rooms in the eye centre are aptly defines ‘an architectural marvel’ in the form of titled glass panes, giving pan view of the eye centre from the reception. The operation rooms are made of high quality dust resistant, washable panels on the walls and the flooring is made of medical grade vinyl.

In an exclusive interaction with WI Bureau, Samira Rathod, Proprietor from Samira Rathod Design Associates (SRDA) further elaborated on the design and other essentials of the infrastructure of the Eye Centre.

Philosophy behind the design
Most clinics, hospitals and nursing homes are designed primarily as technically sound areas for doctors to operate with ease and comfort, but they does not suffice need to build connect with the patients. At the Eye Clinic, which is located in front of the Arabian sea, elevated on the sixth floor, both the light quality, its ventilation/ breeze, itself is a delightful sight. However, to convert the same into a serene experience for the visitors, doctor and the patients, we’ve worked on its architecture.

The positivity that patients need through an invigorating environment in the design is never looked into, for us, it was primary. Thus, the design had to maintain the sense of the light and breeze all throughout, with a possible glimpse of the sea from almost everywhere, was the main design brief.

The planning had other parameters; a spatial efficiency and transparency that allowed for the clinical procedures to be as visible as possible when needed. This has led to a selection of a particular palette of material and language of the design, both of which had to be light, simple, easy to maintain, and easy on the eye.

We’ve used a lot of glass, shera board, wood and perforated white acrylic sliding screens to keep the harsh UV rays out; all of this that inundates the space with a glow of warmth that lends itself to a healing vibe on the whole.

“The foremost aim is to have a complete and affordable eye care system at one place so that patients don’t have to move out of the facility for any diagnostic or therapeutic need as far as eye treatment is considered,” concluded Rathod.
