How Mobile Applications are influencing school learning in India
Mobile application and technological use is a reality no parent can ignore and no child wants to miss.

The Know How of Technology
The number of mobile users are on an ever increase. Technology has literally taken over our lives and governs every aspect of it. It is therefore no exaggeration to say that it is time that we exposed our school going children to application development.  It is no surprise that today, many parents and innovative schools are taking to technology as an ideal teaching methodology.

It isn’t uncommon that a child is at the same time, watching a favorite cartoon and also learning pictorial rhymes on the same device. Learning through a screen device has become a reality and preferred medium as well. Today, children have the advantage of learning through their I-Pad, smart phone, laptops and net book through a flexible and non-intrusive format.

No wonder that children across age groups are reported to be happy learners with better power of retention.

Take for example the IT giant Apple that is out on a citywide expansion of its ‘Everyone Can Code’ programme. Through this, Apple is encouraging school children to explore its proprietary language for building apps, Swift, using a free suite of resources like guides, lessons and educational iPads. Set for spring, the expansion is already launched in partnership with the City of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) and local businesses.

Schools in Kerela are now encouraging application development in their premises. Coming Christmas vacation is going to bring a great Santa gift to almost 30,000 school children in Kerela who will have the fortune to be trained in designing and building mobile apps. Arranged by the completed state-run Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), formerly known as IT@School, this training is being offered to member children of 'Kuttikootam', the IT network of students.

This one day training camp will be held for the students in different batches from December 27-30 and for training purposes App inventor will be used. They are using the App Inventor, a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) application that helps in developing the mobile app through drag and drop method. Thorough the app, students can develop their own apps easily and by avoiding the hitches of writing an actual code.

Pocket Friendly, Parental Guidance
An interesting way to learn is through using codes where you can ‘drag and drop instructions on the app to get a bunch of devices to respond to real situations, like say, sound an alarm when the sun's up.’ Welcome to the world of children’s application Plezmo, that facilitates such fun learning for kids. Avaz app is another Indian brainchild that provides speech therapy guidance for autistic children; and Bulbul Apps is yet another innovation in education, teaching children English and basic Math using mythological tales.

More and more parents are using the mobile phone mania to help children use the screens for better learning. Today, Chennai-based Avaz app can boast of around 40,000 monthly active users globally. Don’t be surprised to know that this Indian application has gathered United States as its biggest market followed by India and European countries including Denmark, France, Sweden and Spain. The app is multilingual--available in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, French, Spanish, Danish and Italian. It is priced at $200 for users overseas and at $100 for the Indian market.
