According to the global wellness tourism market report, one of the important growth drivers of this segment is increasing is the mix of luxury, hospitality and spiritual healing, which is missing in the day-to-day life of people, especially those living in metro cities.

According to the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), the number of Domestic Tourist Visits to the States/UTs was 1652.5 million in 2017as compared to 1615.4 million in 2016 showing growth of 2.3 percent in 2017 over 2016.

Here is what the Ministry of Tourism is doing to promote the travel and tourism sector in India:

Wellness tourism

Leisure travel or wellness tourism has taken the center stage in the Indian wellness industry. People from India and abroad are traveling to places in India for spa treatments, meditation, spiritual healing and herbal therapies. The hospitality industry is actively participating to provide these therapies, spas and salon experiences in their hotels to earn more benefits under the same roof.

This has given scope for several spa and salon players to collaborate with hotels to earn a share of this profit.

The Ministry of Tourism is working towards the development of tourism infrastructure. The development of tourism infrastructure is being given priority to provide a better tourism experience to the tourists. Theme based circuits are being developed under the SwadeshDarshan Scheme spanning the entire country. A total number of seven projects have been sanctioned during 2018-19 for a total amount of Rs.384.67 crore.

Facilities like Tourist Facilitation Centers, Eco Log Huts, Sound and Light Show, Helipads, Cafeteria, Wayside Amenities, Nature Trails, Jetties, Boat club, Adventure Zones, Interpretation Centers, Water Sports, Craft Villages, Tribal Thematic Villages, Illumination etc. have been developed as part of the above projects.

Religious tourism

India is a home for many religious places. Every year, a lot of elderly people in India travel to the religious destinations for their spiritual healing. The MoT is working towards identifying the pilgrimage destinations and schemes are being made to help develop religious tourism in India.

Integrated development of identified pilgrimage destinations is being undertaken under the ‘National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive’ (PRASHAD) Scheme. One project has been sanctioned during 2018-19 for a total amount of Rs.39.24 Crore.

Online Learning Management System

The entire generation is depending upon the apps and online portals from booking their tickets to researching the best places to visit and what cuisines to try in a tourist location, which is why MoT has launched an Online Learning Management System for creating skilled manpower to work as tourist facilitators. The initiative will enable the youth living in the remotest part of the country to skill themselves and facilitate tourists on a pan-India basis. The Online Learning Programme will also lead to the creation of jobs and providing facilitators to tourists at reasonable costs.
