Electric Vehicle Sector to Provide 5 Million Jobs By 2030
Accordong to the report, The EV industry and the automobile industry as a whole is male dominated and hardly has any women representatives. Additionally, there has been a lack of opportunities for women which needs to be solved.

India’s push to green mobility could add ten million jobs in Electric mobility sector creating 50 million jobs in the sector by 2022, a recent report by Electric Vehicle charging provider Statiq has said. According to the report, The EV push in India will provide opportunities for 3 major industries Mobility, infrastructure, and energy which would add 10 million jobs by 2030. 

Adding to the current models, Original Equipment Manufacturers like Tata Mahindra and Hyundai are projected to launch at least 30-40 new Electric Vehicles by 2025, surging the demands for analysts, and product engineers. 

“In addition to the expanding number of available positions in the industry, semiconductor firms like Intel are also looking for engineers with experience in EV powertrains. ESPs, most notably TataElxsi, offer IT and engineering R&D-related services and support, necessitating the allocation of resources for modelling and testing for some of the world's largest carmakers,” added the report. 

Skill Development

As electric vehicle industry needs skilful people, skill development of youth becomes mandatory to fulfil the upcoming demand. The report mentioned that The EV transition across the world is giving rise to a technological transformation which requires both reskilling and training the existing and new workers. Skilling the workforce will play an important role in not only overcoming layoffs and job losses but will also contribute towards a sustainable EV industry in the long-term leading to fiscal growth.  

Challenges in the Skill Development

The report threw light on five major problems related to skill development that are needed to be addressed soon. 

  • There is a strong need to proving niche skills related to connectivity and Artificial Intelligence enabled technology in the automotive space. 
  • Number of courses are very limited and are outdated in nature. The percentage of top institutes offering courses related to the EV industry is negligible. 
  • We have a huge lack of industry standards. Without standardised charging infrastructure, the industry cannot sustain in the long run. There is no standards set on what educational requirements are necessary for entering the industry.
  • The EV sector is in its growth phase and holds greater future potential, to meet the talent supply requirements it is essential to have a workforce which is ready for this transition. 
  • The EV industry and the automobile industry as a whole is male dominated and hardly has any women representatives. Additionally, there has been a lack of opportunities for women which needs to be solved for.

Steps by Government

The report stated that various states have taken steps to develop the skills. “Andhra Pradesh Skill development incentive - stipend of INR 10,000 per employee per year to a maximum of 50 employees for MSME & large firms. In Delhi Hero Electric and Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University  (DSEU) and WRI India have joined hands to train its ‘Diploma in Automobile Engineering programme students. Every year 100 students will be trained in basic and advanced EV mechanics training and provided with relevant internship and apprenticeship opportunities (WRI 2022).”

As mentioned in the report, Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) Kerala and Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers are to establish two centres of excellence in electric vehicles (EVs) in the state for E-Mobility, Research and Skill Development. 

“TATA Technologies Ltd and Government of Karnataka have signed a 10-year MoA to modernize 150 Government owned Industrial Training Institutes, these will be a source of skill upgradation and potential employers. The investment is roughly of INR 4600 Crore. The idea is to embrace 4.0 technologies including the ones in the Battery EV Training (Tata Technologies 2020),” said the report. 

Steps by Intitutions 

Accroding to the reports universities and instituions are no behind in skilling the future workforce for Electric Vehicle industry. Below are the five top level institutions along with the program they are providing 

  • IIT Delhi - Electric Vehicle Technology (6 months online course) and MTech in Electric Mobility.
  • IIT Madras - E-mobility course for working professionals on eco-system and basic fundamentals in technical areas such as vehicle development, power electronics, battery engineering, thermal management, power trains, and EMI/ EMC, etc offered by Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras.
  • IIT Guwahati - MS (Research) in Electric Mobility. 
  • IIT Bombay - Power Electronics & Motors for EVs (4.5 Months course).
  • ESDC (Electric Vehicles Skill Development Centre) - Skill Development, Research, Live Projects done  by ESDC Xplore in collaboration with SRM University and is established at the SRMIST, NCR Campus, Ghaziabad.

Steps by industry partners

Industry partners are also providing courses and programs in order to train people. The report mentioned few of the names who are doing so. 

ISIE India - In the initial phase, ISIE India will provide courses like Certified Diploma in Electric Vehicle Powertrain and Certified Diploma in Electric Vehicle Design Simulation and Component Selection with assistance from MG Motors, Hero Electric, and Olectra Green Tech. 

Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) The Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) joined forces with MG Motor India, ISIE India, and the Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers to address challenges with EVs, the development of skilled labour for the automotive industry, and youth employment (ET Auto 2021). Through online and offline skill development programmes for engineering students under the COE for EV research and Skill development - electric vehicle engineering, the cooperation aims to democratise high-end automotive technology throughout the nation. 

Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) MG Motor India has joined hands with the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) with the vision to foster skill development in the EV component industry. In line with the alliance's goal of assisting the growth of the EV ecosystem, ACMA will carry out research on ZS EV to encourage skill development in the component segment. In order to advance its investigation into the use of electric vehicles in urban India, it will collaborate with IIT Sonipat. 

Skill Lync Open free exclusive EV courses for engineers on EV Design. It is a global platform with multiple corporate partnerships with Cyient, Renault-Nissan Technology Business Center India (RNTBCI), TATA Elxsi, Expleo, Verolt, Segula Technologies to provide job offers to engineering student after the completing the course.

Electric One The first ever Electric Vehicle Center of Excellence (COE), known as “Skill Next” was launched at Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, Faridabad. This COE has a sole objective of being an EV COE, which aims to educate, engage & elevate EV ecosystem. The Center's Certification and Curriculum-based Experiential Program will help students develop the crucial skills they need for the rapidly expanding futuristic electric car industry (Electric One 2022). 

Mercedes-Benz For the ADAM course at the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS Women's College) in Pune, Mercedes-Benz unveiled this EV vehicle. Several Indian institutions, including the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology and the Government Polytechnic of Pune, have adopted the brand's one-year programme (KIIT). Other instances are Barton Hill Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala; Bhubaneswar; Government Engineering College (GEC); and others. The 12-month Advanced Diploma in ADAM course will include an EV module that will function as a public-private cooperation. With courses being divided in subtoptics for easy understanding, the effort will assist students in upgrading their skills with the most recent technology breakthroughs. In the meantime, the course will provide knowledge of the most advanced EV technology in line with international industry requirements. The course will increase knowledge of HV Systems & measures in addition to advanced levels of vehicle systems.
