In 2014, Supreme Court of India has recognized transgenders community as the third gender along with male and female. The apex court stated that it is the right of every human being to choose their gender. This strong judgment came at the right time and empowered the transgender community socially and economically. The judgement further equipped the transgenders as now they cannot be forced to write male or female against their gender.

Transgenders are now allowed to take admission in educational institutions and are also given employment on the basis that they belong to the third gender category. They are also given educational and employment reservation as OBCs.
